O2 Reveal November Release For Samsung Galaxy Nexus

October 25, 2011 in Gaming, Technology

UK mobile phone carrier O2 have uploaded a product placeholder page for the world’s first Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smart phone. The splash page reveals that the handset will launch in the UK in November. If you are looking for a new phone then I would highly recommend you consider the Samsung Galaxy Nexus as it features components which are set to become mainstream in the next year such as NFC support for payments.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus sports a HDMI out and Ice Cream Sandwich allows gamepad input via the micro-USB slot. This allows you to connect your phone to a TV and play games on your phone with a gamepad essentially turning it into a mini games console.

Rent Movies On Your Android Phone

October 21, 2011 in Technology

In an update to the Google Android Market today, customers in the UK can now rent movies via the Films tab. They have had this feature in the USA for a while now but it has only just rolled out in the UK. As with the recent introduction of movie rentals on YouTube, prices tend to be fairly high at the moment with typical rentals costing on average £2.49 or £3.49. The service is provided by Google Movies.

YouTube Adds Movie Rentals To The UK

October 15, 2011 in Technology

You can now rent movies from YouTube in the UK. The service has been available in the USA but it has now rolled out into the UK. With over 1000 films at your disposal spanning multiple generations, there is plenty of choice to keep you going including new releases such as Fast Five.

Newer films tend to be going for £3.49 and older films for £2.49. The price is for a 48 hour pass to access the movie. People have already taken to the blog to complain about the high pricing. Some comments put it plain and simple saying they can buy the same film on DVD to keep permanently for the same price or cheaper elsewhere. Others wouldn’t mind paying the price if there were high quality 720p versions of movies to rent as most of the films are being streamed at 480p.

Another update to YouTube which I didn’t get an opportunity to comment on was the new editing features for video uploaders. They allow uploaders to add effects and make subtle corrections to the video before it is made public. This addition comes after the earlier addition of increasing upload file limits from 10 to 15 minutes.

Streaming is going to become a significant way in which the public access their media content in the near future and it will be interesting to see how the competition in the market defines itself here in the UK after the success they have had in the USA. To check out the movies click on the Films tab at the top of the YouTube home page. Alternatively go to: http://www.youtube.com/movies

Apple Launches Official iPhone To Micro USB Adapter

October 14, 2011 in Technology

Apple have always been fussy with their proprietary connections. I’m sure many Apple users have had issues with being unable to charge their iPhone because nobody has a spare Apple cable lying around. This hasn’t been an issue for a while as third parties have launched adapters to convert your iPhone connector to Micro USB. Micro USB is the standard connector used by Android and Blackberry smart phones and greatly increases the chances of your friends having the correct cable lying around. Apple launched their own official adapter today and at a reasonable price of £8 you can now pick it up from the Apple Store or website. The adapter retains the ability to use your phone for charging or syncing purposes.

OnLive UK Launch

October 13, 2011 in Gaming, Technology

The Eurogamer Expo was host to a very special event. The UK launch of new cloud online gaming service OnLive. Attendees were able to get their hands on a free OnLive games console. It was also supposed to be available for retail at GAME stores in the UK for a launch price of £69.99 although restricted to the high street chain’s website.

More than two weeks later there is no sign of the console being available for purchase. I managed to obtain one and haven’t had enough time with the device to provide a great deal of impressions yet but expect a full review very soon.
