I found Wipeout Vita to be a very pleasant surprise. I have found previous iterations in the franchise tedious to play due to narrow tracks and constantly bashing into walls. Wipeout Vita gave me a reason to like the game again, it widened the race track!

Widening the race track allows you more freedom to take short or wide corners and drive more naturally. The races felt fun and great to play. Another great addition was the Read the rest of this entry →

PS Vita – Little Big Planet – Hands On – Eurogamer Expo 2011

Little Big Planet is one of the most innovate franchises of this generation. It emphasises the motto Play, Create and Share. What better franchise to help the launch of a console with new innovative features.

As expected, Little Big Planet Vita makes use of every form of new input on the device allowing for deeper puzzle integration and more brain scratching experiences. The front touch screen is used to drag objects down to a height Sackboy can jump on to progress. It was also used in spinning a wheel that Sackboy was holding on to. The rear touch was used to push forward a set of piano keys that created a platform for Sackboy to run across. The motion tilt feature was implemented into a basket on a pulley that allowed Sackboy to move across a large gap.

The fantastic bright OLED screen on the PS Vita helped bring out the colourful visual style of Little Big Planet. After playing this demonstration level it was quite clear that the PS Vita deserved its own custom version of Little Big Planet. The game play feels very different to the console games and is worth buying because it is a fresh and independent step away from other games in the franchise.

Batman Arkham City – Hands On – Eurogamer Expo 2011

Batman Arkham City Booth

Batman Arkham City Booth

I had the opportunity to play the E3 demo which gives you a chance to play as Catwoman and Batman. Batman Arkham Asylum had a very distinct art style with dark environments and beefy character models. This gave the game a unique atmosphere which carries through in the sequel. The exception to the rule is actually how small Catwoman’s character is. This in a way portrays her style of combat. She is quick and agile in a fight tending to jump around and attack like a gymnast occasionally whipping her enemies.

The cut scenes that follow are very well executed in terms of camera angles and musical score to really emphasize the drama that comes with Batman’s universe. The voice acting is also brilliant setting a great tone whilst showcasing the eccentric personalities of Gotham City’s villains. A shoulder mounted camera is used at certain points which I personally am not a big fan off however it isn’t used during important points in the game which is a relief.

UFC Undisputed 3 Booth

With UFC Undisputed having some competition this year in the form of Supremacy MMA, you would hope THQ has done enough to keep the sequel at the top of the food chain. I’ve played the demos of previous games in the series and even then I could see significant differences in the new game.

Ridge Racer Unbounded Booth

Ridge Racer Unbounded Booth

Ridge Racer is a game that has usually been reserved for console launches. Ridge Racer Unbounded breaks that tradition and takes the franchise in a new direction. Inspired by more successful titles such as Burnout, Need For Speed and Split Second, Unbounded brings a gritty street racer vibe to the franchise.

My first impressions from early in game footage made me feel as though Read the rest of this entry →

RAGE Booth

RAGE has plenty of hype surrounding it, mainly because it is from the creators of the first person shooter, id Software. Each new game id Software has released, has stepped up the bar in video games in a unique way. The new id Tech 5 game engine is on show here boasting 60 frames per second action and new mega textured environments. RAGE certainly looks the part, but how well does it play?

Ninja Gaiden 3 Booth

Ninja Gaiden 3 Booth

Ninja Gaiden is notorious for being an incredibly brutal and difficult game. The third iteration in the franchise is taking a step forward for the better with a new director. This brings a host of changes including new visual styles and locations, moves and other game play elements.

I had an opportunity to play a sequence set in modern day London during a stormy winter night. The atmosphere was set very well and London looked great running across London style rooftops with landmarks such as Read the rest of this entry →
