Cloud gaming service Gaikai have announced plans for full game streaming. The service so far has been very restrictive by only allowing the streaming of game demos from partners such as EA and Ubisoft. After seeing the success OnLive have been having in streaming complete games, Gaikai believe they are in a strong position to capitalise on that market.

News Round Up 11th-16th January 2012

January 16, 2012 in Gaming, Technology

This round up will focus on the remaining news surrounding the CES 2012 technology event and a few important events occurring in gaming. Hopefully I will return to posting individual articles this week as news begins to slow down.

1) At CES OnLive announced a new cloud PC service which would allow users to sign into a Windows 7 machine complete with touch gestures, 2GB of personal storage and a full suite of Microsoft Office for free on an Apple iPad. I consider this as one of the biggest announcements of the trade show this year and news has quickly spread as the new OnLive app has skyrocketed to the top of the app charts this week. Frankly, an essential app for every iPad owner.

2) TV progression this year took a different direction as glasses free 3D did not appear in mass but rather the implementation of voice and gesture recognition for input, in addition to the development of Smart TV applications. Here is a video of a Samsung rep showcasing the functionality on their new TV’s. It is quite a cool feature although some may debate it adds a whole new level to the meaning of lazy.

3) Popular industry news site MCV have published the results of the 2012 UK Games Industry Salary Review. The average salary for non executive staff is £33,123. It seems as though there are similarities between different areas of the industry, and interesting feedback on male vs female salaries. The full report can be read at the link below.

4) Singer Adele takes the number one spot in the UK entertainment charts for 2011.  Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (2,814,609) outsold anticipated film Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2,532,551) back in November but Adele managed to have the last laugh with 3,924,985 copies of her album 21. It is notable that in terms of monetary sales over units, COD MW3 retains first place. The full list can be viewed at the link below.

5) Susan Taylor, a victim in the latest press attention to the Xbox Live fraud scandal has made public the fact that she gets contacted by many other users who have been in similar situations and the problem is in fact widespread. This morning, someone claiming to know how to hack into accounts spoke about the issue.

…point the finger at Xbox.com – the website. This allows eight password attempts at a Windows Live ID before CAPTCHA is triggered – the system that presents those squiggly words. A simple password-generating script can apparently be used to exploit this system before CAPTCHA kicks in.

The Windows Live IDs come from playing Xbox 360 games online. Gather Gamertags and Google search them in the hope you’ll find related email addresses. Try these as Windows Live IDs and the Xbox.com website will let you know if they’re valid – “the email address or password is incorrect” – or not – “That Windows Live ID doesn’t exist.”

Using these methods you can apparently brute force your way into a near-limitless supply of Xbox Live accounts and use their saved banking details to buy Microsoft Points.

6) UK retailer GAME recently attended a press event held by EA. A tweet from the company revealed that the new Medal of Honor title and a yet unannounced Need For Speed title were being shown off behind the closed doors.

7) Early adopters of the PlayStation Vita can expect a promising start to 2012 according to John Koller whilst speaking to Gamespot.

What we really wanted to do, and I think we learned from past, most recent, handheld device launches, is that you don’t want to launch strongly and then go dark for three or four months and have nothing…So in subsequent months for Vita, we have launch, then we have MLB, then we got Mortal Kombat, then Resistance, then Little Big Planet, then Call of Duty, and Assassin’s Creed.

We already know from an earlier announcement that games are being pushed back and away from the initial launch date such as Resistance and LBP. If this order is true, we can expect Mortal Kombat in March/April along with COD and AC around June.

8) A new feature is coming to Facebook as part of their new partnership with music streaming service Spotify. “Listen With Friends” will post details about what you are listening to on Facebook where other Spotify users will then be able to join the original poster in a private chat room to listen to the song together. Other than the small issue of sharing your music preferences with Facebook, I wonder whether this feature will be used much by the Facebook  and Spotify communities.

9) Further to the announcement of Google implementing an official design brief for the skinning of Ice Cream Sandwich/Android 4.0, a new portal has gone live on the web to help developers learn about the new standards. Android Design is available to view at the link below.

http://developer.android.com/design/index.html

10) In a shocking announcement, Dr Dre and Monster Cable are ending their Beats By Dre partnership venture. The brand has been a major success for both companies but they decided not to renew their contract over disputes regarding revenue share and credit for the success. Beats Electronics will retain the rights to the design, sound signature and branding of the range so don’t expect much to change visually. It will definitely be interesting to see who Dr Dre partners with now and whether they will retain the quality components. Monster always overpriced their products but I don’t see a new partner leading to a drop in price for a pair of Beats. Monster are the biggest losers here as they will no longer have the incredible marketing push of the partnership. They do make a good set of headphones (Turbines) although the company has little to no market presence by itself and a poor reputation for overpricing.

11) The iPhone 4S has just launched in China and photos of the launch look similar to the London Riots. Fights started breaking out between large crowds of consumers as they were eager to purchase Apple’s latest device. There were many resellers looking to capitalise on the cheaper price and buy in bulk. The Apple Store ending up getting egged and staff had to close due to the violence. Apple have postponed the sales of the device in China while it evaluates its options.

12) Rumours are heating up surrounding the launch of a next generation iPad. The rumours suggest a March release, higher screen resolution, quad core processor and support for 4G/LTE mobile network speeds in the US. Apple do have a press event in the upcoming days where we will find out if these rumours are really true.

13) More rumours were circulated last night on Twitter suggesting that veteran game publisher THQ was in a poor financial situation and had cancelled their 2014 product line up. THQ have a range of successful titles under their belt such as WWE, UFC, Saints Row, Darksiders and Warhammer. Later today, THQ denied the allegations saying they had a great Christmas period in terms of sales with important new titles hitting stores in the upcoming months.

14) Another big prototype to grace the floors of CES this year was Samsung’s Transparent TV. It acts as a TV made out of glass with lighting occuring from the edges rather than the back of the unit to avoid the rear panelling. Definitely something we may see more of in the future although you may not want to place it on an exterior window if you do not want your neighbours seeing what you’re doing.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/15/Samsung-OLED-Transparent-Smart-window-CES-update/

15) Not much fluctuation in this week’s Video Game Charts as FIFA retains the number 1 spot. Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012 was the only new entry in the top 20 at number 12. Just Dance 3 took second, Skyrim third, Battlefield 3 fourth, COD MW3 fifth, Zumba Fitness 1 and 2 at sixth and seventh, RAGE at eighth, Assassins Creed Revelations ninth and NFS The Run rounds off the top ten.

16) UK retailer GAME are the latest company to be the victims of a hacking attempt according to a list posted on PasteBin. The list is comprised of 400 user account emails and passwords and can be viewed at the link below. GAME have released a statement saying that the details listed are not reflective of any customer accounts and that their customer security is very tight. Customers need not worry although be reminded to use strong and varying passwords for individual websites.

http://pastebin.com/diff.php?i=Cb4nJfm0

17) Catalyst Gaming was also the victim of a similar hacking attack with 2000 user account information posted on PasteBin. They have not denied the hack attempt although it is worth noting that their passwords are all hashed making it slightly more tedioust for hackers to breach their customer accounts.

http://pastebin.com/Uj3ZTJWp

18) EA have announced details regarding the SSX Limited Edition. It will be available from GAME and GameStation for £39.99 and will give purchasers an additional location of Mount Fuji with 6 unique drop points and the classic character Eddie Wachowski. Eddie will have access to an elite snowboard and an attribute perk. Play.com are offering an Elise snowboard, HMV Mac’s snowboard, Thehut.com Zoe’s snowboard and Amazon Kaori’s snowboard as preorder incentives for the regular edition.

News Summary 10th January More New Tech 2012

January 10, 2012 in Gaming, Technology

1) Cloud game streaming service OnLive have revealed an ace up their sleeves. Later this week iPad users will be able to access a cloud based version of Windows 7 with Microsoft Office applications installed for FREE. The implementation will support Windows touch gestures and input that will allow for word processing and other documents you may wish to create. The free version will come with 2GB storage linked to your OnLive ID although a premium option will also be made available. A subscription of about £7 per month will give you priority access to the service, additional applications, cloud accelerated web browsing and up to 50GB of storage. Being cloud based, the virtual Windows software will be able to run all sorts of processor heavy applications such as Photoshop. This is a great development for the company which also aims to roll out the service to Android devices, OnLive micro console and PCs/Macs in the near future.

2) Microsoft have officially announced a Kinect release for Windows. Expected to launch next month on the market, the Windows Kinect is tuned to only work with the official Kinect SDK and will set developers back an extra $100 than the console counterpart. Microsoft say the price hike is due to it being subsidized by console gamers on the Xbox and also mentioned the console version is not covered by warranty for use on other devices i.e. PC. I don’t believe developers will pay extra for the official Windows version over the Xbox version with no difference.

3) Streaming service Netflix is aiming to launch in the US on day one of the PlayStation Vita release. It is unclear whether the freshly launched service will have the same treatment in Europe for new Vita adopters.

4) The first map pack for Assassins Creed Revelations will be released on January 24th and will feature 3 new maps in addition to 3 classic maps from Brotherhood. The classic maps are Firenze, San Donato and Siena and will be accompanied by new maps Jerusalem, Imperial District and Dyers. The cost will be £7.99.

5) UK retailer GAME has announced a 15% decline in sales of the 8 week Christmas period over last year.

6) Retailer HMV also experienced a decline of 16% in sales and are now thinking of reducing the amount of games they sell in hopes to remove dead stock of older titles.

7) Chinese factory Foxconn workers ran into more issues with management as 300 employees threatened mass suicide. The factory supplies parts and products to big players such as Sony, Microsoft and Apple and have had terrible employee satisfaction issues which even involved putting up suicide nets around the factory residences. The latest argument arose when management refused to give employees a pay rise and offered them a compensation package if they resigned instead. It came as no surprise that Foxconn then refused to pay the compensation package to employees who had resigned and employees threatened to kill themselves as a result. After protesting for a few hours the employees did not end up harming themselves.

8) Another world first from CES. Panasonic have announced the world’s smallest and thinnest 4K x 2K resolution 20 inch IPS LCD monitor. We know 4K HD is where TV resolution is heading and even 8K HD according to Sharp but Panasonic are the first to show us it in PC Monitor form.

9) Justin Timberlake, co-owner of MySpace announces MySpace TV for Panasonic’s Viera Connect Smart TV Platform. The portal will give users access to MySpace’s large library of music and video content.

10) Asus Transformer Prime Ice Cream Sandwich Update now rolling out

11) Asus announce baby brother Nvidia Tegra 3 MeMo 370T tablet. 7 inches with ICS and a retail for around £200. Very attractive.

12) Sony Bloggie Live offers live WiFi streaming from a mini handheld camcorder. Outdoor vloggers will love this.

13) Panasonic’s new TV line up dominated by LED as Plasma takes a back seat. In a game changing move by Panasonic, they have two introductory LCD TV’s followed by a large mid range of LED TV’s and a few high end plasmas. This may be because of their comfort to be able to improve the picture of LED over their old LCD range. Still one of the best brands in TV’s on the market.

14) Whilst Samsung and LG are busy promoting OLED TV’s Sony have abandoned support for the format by cooking up something called Crystal LED. It is still in prototype form but according to viewers definitely looks the part.

15) Extreme sport camera manufacturer GoPro has unveiled a remote control wrist strap and WiFi back pack which will allow users to use their Go Pro cameras in more ways and interact with their smart phones.

16) Toshiba replace Flip and compete with Sony Bloggie for handheld camcorder market share with the introduction of the Camileo series.

17) Analogix Slimport announced. A new cable which will allow consumers with smartphones and no HDMI out port to use their Micro USB connection to upscale and display phone content on their TV’s and monitors. As Analogix is an OEM company the technology will probably be licensed to a cable manufacturer and come to market under another name.

18) Sky TV UK are working with Zeebox to introduce a new iPad app that will allow it’s viewers to discuss and participate in social interaction with other fans of it’s TV shows. The app is set for a Summer release.

19) Rocstor’s amphibious hard drive is something out a James Bond Movie. It looks sleek and is secured by a smart card and code combination lock for all your secret documents.

20) Windows 8 has a cool password picture unlock feature which allows you to unlock your PC using points clicked on by a custom wallpaper set by you.

21) The next stage of Windows 8 will be released in February and it is also when Microsoft are hoping to launch the initial version of it’s new app store.

22) The BlueStack app player promises to bring over 400,000 apps over to Windows 8 from the Android platform without porting.

23) Household security firm Swann announce MP3 doorbell which allows you to set up a custom ringtone for your house and makes “ding dong” a thing of the past.

24) Google personalises search results based on your Google+ circles. A new update allows you to search for content based on your friends.

25) Gaming peripheral company Razer announce the Razer Naga Hex mouse a simplified version of last year’s Razer Naga MMO. This one features 6 customizable buttons on the left hand side for games which require less “functions”.

26) 50 Cent and Ludacris announce new models in their Sleek Audio and Soul headphone range.

27) Cloud gaming service Gaikai have partnered with LG to bring cloud gaming built in directly to it’s upcoming Cinema 3D TV range. You can plug in any wired or wireless USB game pad into a USB TV port to play games. It is unclear how this will work with Gaikai’s demo restricted business model.

28) Razer unveil Project Fiona a tablet with attached controllers it acts as a disguised PC. Housing a copy of Windows 8 and Intel’s upcoming Ivy Bridge processor it will be capable of running high end PC games locally on the go. It is a prototype for now but with enough interest and a $1000 asking price Razer will only make it if there is enough demand.

29) New Samsung WF457 washing machine can tell your Samsung smart phone when your washing is done. I see this as a good indicator to show how the smartphone will be the one device that controls as many aspects of your life as possible.

30) Ghost Recon Future Soldier delayed until May, expect a PS3 and Xbox beta in April.

31) New Saints Row The Third DLC incoming next week based on a insane game show called Professor Genki Bowl 7.

32) 20 pieces of MW3 DLC to be released from now until September. More details here.

33) Two UK Game studios have been closed down today. Monumental Games who created Moto GP 10/11 have gone into administration. Sony owned studio Big Big Studios, responsible for upcoming PS Vita title Little Deviants are also undergoing a restructuring. They will collaborate with Guerilla Games in Amsterdam to create a new Killzone title for the PS Vita. Bethesda have also announced redundancies at id Software after poor sales of recent release Rage.

OnLive UK Launch

October 13, 2011 in Gaming, Technology

The Eurogamer Expo was host to a very special event. The UK launch of new cloud online gaming service OnLive. Attendees were able to get their hands on a free OnLive games console. It was also supposed to be available for retail at GAME stores in the UK for a launch price of £69.99 although restricted to the high street chain’s website.

More than two weeks later there is no sign of the console being available for purchase. I managed to obtain one and haven’t had enough time with the device to provide a great deal of impressions yet but expect a full review very soon.
