RIM BlackBerry Founders Step Down

January 23, 2012 in Technology

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins

There seems to be an executive shuffle happening at RIM HQ. Co-founders Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis have stepped down and appointed Thorsten Heins as new president and CEO. Heins previously worked for Siemens before taking up a Chief Operating Officer position in the Product Engineering department at RIM. Jim will now become a company director and Mike, vice chair of the company board.

The changes are in light of very unstable times at the company. Thorsten has announced that he may take the company in a new direction by licensing out their upcoming BlackBerry 10 platform to other developers. On the flip side he may also reconsider supporting Google’s Android platform on the company’s own upcoming handsets.

All that is certain is 2012 is going to be make or break for RIM.

News Summary 6th January 2012

January 6, 2012 in Gaming, Technology

I’m going to try a new format of writing from now on. With the 2012 Consumer Electronic Show approaching, there are already plenty of tech related news articles storming the internet. Unfortunately, being a one man band, I don’t have enough hours in the day to write about every item and work on my portfolio. Therefore, I intend to write one article a day summarising the most interesting announcements made. If you have any suggestions or comments you can reply to this article or contact me via Facebook, Twitter or my website contact form.

1) RIM’s Blackberry Playbook tablet OS 2.0 will be revealed at CES. They will also provide more information and unveil new handsets based on BlackBerry OS 7. Furthermore reports have come in indicating only one handset will launch with BlackBerry OS 10 later this year. That handset will be the London which was leaked a while back. RIM have indicated OS 10 announcements will be postponed until Mobile World Congress 2012 next month.

2) Apple launched a new app for 99c on the App Store called GameStore. It was later removed from the store as it was put up prematurely. We know Apple will be holding a press conference soon so this very well may be an announcement for that event. Either way it is good news as users will be able to go to separate stores for applications and games. It should also help metric monitoring.

3) Corning are set to announce Gorilla Glass Version 2 next week. The original glass is used in some smart phones today and provides a highly durable and tough screen which resists from breaking upon impact. Version 2 promises to feature better touch functionality, larger panels for devices such as tablets and be slimmer to benefit device form factor.

4) Turtle Beach have announced updated version of their gaming headsets. The updated wireless versions feature a dual band receiver allowing users with plenty of wireless devices in the house to switch to the 5ghz frequency to eliminate interference. A new M range was also announced for listening on the go and will feature in line remotes to control music playback on iPhone and Android devices. An additional product is set to be unveiled live on Spike TV’s coverage next week.

5) Netflix app arrives on UK PS3′s. The service is not yet active but a launch is imminent.

6) Sony’s Kaz Hirai receives a promotion to President of Sony. Howard Stringer will remain CEO of the company.

BlackBerry OS 10 Phones Dated End Of 2012

BlackBerry London

RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis has made a public statement informing consumers that their latest range of BlackBerry handsets sporting the BlackBerry 10 operating system won’t be seen on store shelves until late in 2012. This is due to a critical chipset not being available in production capacity until mid 2012. Alternatives do not offer a similar balance of power and battery life according to Mike so fans will have to wait.

RIM are relying heavily on BB 10 to be a success due to declining market share and currently they seem to be playing catch up in the smartphone market. Hopefully the extra time will be utilised to remove first generation bugs and add new enticing features.

Research In Motion have lost a trademark battle for “BBX”. Touted as the pinnacle upcoming Operating System from the firm to put BlackBerry’s back on the map after their consistent loss of market share over the past few months, the OS will now just be named BlackBerry 10. RIM BlackBerry Have One More Surprise Up Their Sleeves

November 15, 2011 in Technology

BlackBerry London

It has been a terrible year for BlackBerry manufacturer RIM. Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS have continued to swallow market share away from RIM for months now. BlackBerry also suffered from a mediocre launch of their tablet the BlackBerry play book and experienced service outages for a few days too. Many feel BlackBerry are falling behind by not jumping on the smart phone bandwagon especially as competitors get closer to providing a solid enterprise service in conjunction with the benefits of a normal smart phone.

That may all be about to change as it seems as though BlackBerry want to remain in the race with a leaked shot of the BlackBerry London. A four inch full touch screen handset as slim as other smart phones on the market featuring the upcoming BBX OS based on QNX concepts. It looks really sleek and stylish and one which may pull rival customers back to BlackBerry. The phone is set to go on sale in June 2012 and may be a good sign of things to come from RIM.
