News Summary 30th January 2012
January 30, 2012 in Gaming, Technology
1) Good news for Sky+ HD subscribers in the UK. Sky’s Video On Demand service Anytime+ was previously exclusive to customers who ordered a broadband and TV Sky package. From now on, any subscriber with a Sky+ HD box will have access to the service for free. The change comes due to two major VOD services BBC iPlayer and ITV Player joining the platform.
2) Does your partner enjoy playing Skyrim? Why not give them a Skyrim Valentines card. http://eatfun.deviantart.com/
3) THQ have started repositioning themselves after a eye opening letter from ex-employees last week over poor management. First on that list is redundancies. 14 staff have been layed off at the Australian studio and there is word that the Japan studio may be permanently closed.
4) French news site LePoint.fr recently interviewed representatives from Microsoft and Sony regarding the announcement of their next generation consoles. Director of French Marketing Xbox, said that there would be no new Xbox announcements in 2012. He went on to make a very good point.
“We’re not here to counter Nintendo and they’re not here to fight the other manufacturers. Nintendo has put itself in a different cycle, they’re advancing at their own pace.”
Meanwhile, CEO of PlayStation France had a similar view stating the following;
“Wii is pressed for time because it’s in decline. In our case, we have a lot less pressure. We were the last to release PS3, and we will probably be the last to announce something.”
I personally would not at all be surprised if both companies make a prototype announcement at E3 in June. I see Microsoft being in a more volatile position to move towards the next generation as the Xbox 360 is showing a few signs of ageing. The PS3 will more than likely be announced at a later date although Sony is noted for saying they want to have a smaller launch window between them and their competitors for the next generation.
5) Useful app of the day. London Bus Checker offers you live bus travel information in London. You can map out the route the bus takes and the app offers users a 30 day free trial. Full price is currently £1.24.

6) This week’s game charts have only seen a bit of shuffling again. FIFA 12 retains the chart cup for the sixth week running. Two new entries this week with Resident Evil Revelations 3DS taking sixth place and the Sims 3 expansion pack in at 23. The remainder of the top 5 are filled by COD MW3, Skyrim, Just Dance 3 and Battlefield 3 in that order.
7) A few interesting behind the scenes articles to finish off the news today. An interview about the Buddhist beliefs that went into creating super crazy insane over the top did I mention crazy game Asuras Wrath and another exploring the creation of the opening cinematic for Deus Ex Human Revolution.
