News Summary 31st January 2012

January 31, 2012 in Gaming, Technology

1) The FBI are allegedly using Skype logs as evidence in court against MegaUpload’s Kim Dotcom although the way the FBI managed to acquire such evidence is suspicious. The FBI say the evidence was obtained through search warrants which may lead you to believe that it was just a chat history file stored on Kim’s computer. When you look at Skype’s Privacy Policy they say no conversation logs are stored on their servers for longer than 30 days and the FBI was using history from conversations which occured as far back as five years ago as evidence. This information leads to the conclusion that the FBI injected Dotcom’s PC with spyware and it wouldn’t be the first time. A piece of spyware called CIPAV was injected on to a suspect’s PC under terrorism threats in the past.

2) Apple have hired former Dixons CEO John Browett to manage the expansion of their physical counterpart Apple Stores. Many would say the move is a strange hire by Apple seeing as Dixons no longer have a retail presence and the other group franchises PC World and Currys suffer from poor customer reputations. Apple have a reasonable street presence with 33 retail outlets in the UK although marketing associated for the brand is predominantly focused around Apple products rather than the stores to purchase them at. This is what I feel John will aim to do. You can expect more TV adverts promoting the reasons to visit an Apple Store and products paired with real store locations to let consumers know Apple Stores exist and they can purchase their new i devices from them.

3) The Twisted Metal demo hits the PlayStation Store today and will be available to play until 8th February. The full game is set for release on the 17th February and David Jaffe has confirmed European purchasers will also receive Twisted Metal Black for free with new purchases.

4) EA’s website was the victim of a new exploit yesterday as a hacker decided to “customize” the company’s home page. EA have confirmed they fixed the loophole which was the result of a recent security update and no user details were compromised.

5) THQ seem to be getting themselves into all sorts of trouble lately. The NASDAQ Stock Exchange has threatened to de-list the company from the market after THQ’s share price failed to rise above $1 since the start of December. They have given THQ a 180 day period until July 23rd to raise their share price above $1 and maintain the boundary for ten consecutive days.

6) Xbox Live Arcade game Trials Evolution has leaked on to torrent sites ahead of release. The leak is from an internal source as press haven’t even received their review copies yet. Red Lynx are known for leaking their original title to raise publicity although they have denied any such strategy this time around.

7) Beatles star Sir Paul McCartney mentioned in a recent interview that he is composing the soundtrack for an unannounced video game. He believes that “computer games sell better than CD’s these days.”

8) Capcom have announced that purchasers of Dragon’s Dogma will receive early access to the upcoming Resident Evil 6 demo. What is even more interesting is the dates and deals mentioned. Dragon’s Dogma is set for release on May 25th. Xbox purchasers will obtain access to the game on July 3rd almost 4 months prior to release. PS3 owners will gain access on September 5th, that’s a big difference. It’s worth noting the game releases on the 22nd November. It seems as though Microsoft are now purchasing exclusivity contracts for third-party demos from publishers. Another way this could be seen is that Xbox owners will have an exclusive Online Beta in July and both consoles will obtain a single player demo in September. Capcom are hoping that the incentive will boost sales of Dragon’s Dogma which it should.

9) PlayStation Plus subscribers are in for a few treats this month. For February, subscribers will receive a free copy of The Simpsons Arcade and a week early compared to normal users. In addition, Square Enix are offering a free copy of PS1 classic Final Fantasy V. Discounts this month are on titles such as House of the Dead 3, Sonic Adventure, Vandal Hearts and the Splinter Cell trilogy. As a special Valentines day treat, subscribers can get Far Cry 2 for free from the 15th to 22nd February.

10) Mozilla have released V10 of Firefox. It features a few subtle tweaks although has a bug with scrolling using browser GMail. Hold off a few days before updating.

11) US Homeland Security are rejecting entry to travellers who have made “suspective” comments regarding their trips on social network site Twitter even if they were “light hearted”. Read the full article at the BBC News link below.

12) The best new videos today involve a 100 year old woman playing on a Nintendo handheld, the famous actors voicing Mass Effect 3 characters and a teaser for new Xbox cover based shooter Hybrid from the studio that brought us Scribblenauts.

EA & Activision Experiment With New Online Passes

January 31, 2012 in Featured, Gaming

SSX 2012

SSX 2012

The Online Pass was implemented last year as a method for publishers to generate income from used game sales. The pass usually costs the second hand purchaser approximately £8-£10 for access to the game’s online features, which new purchasers would have “free” access to upon their initial purchase.

Today two major publishers announced new twists on the online pass scheme, EA for SSX and Activision for Prototype 2. Both are steps in very different directions but could help shape the future of online passes especially because the current method is still fairly new.

EA will give second hand purchasers Read the rest of this entry →

News Summary 30th January 2012

January 30, 2012 in Gaming, Technology

1) Good news for Sky+ HD subscribers in the UK. Sky’s Video On Demand service Anytime+ was previously exclusive to customers who ordered a broadband and TV Sky package. From now on, any subscriber with a Sky+ HD box will have access to the service for free. The change comes due to two major VOD services BBC iPlayer and ITV Player joining the platform.

2) Does your partner enjoy playing Skyrim? Why not give them a Skyrim Valentines card. http://eatfun.deviantart.com/

3) THQ have started repositioning themselves after a eye opening letter from ex-employees last week over poor management. First on that list is redundancies. 14 staff have been layed off at the Australian studio and there is word that the Japan studio may be permanently closed.

4) French news site LePoint.fr recently interviewed representatives from Microsoft and Sony regarding the announcement of their next generation consoles. Director of French Marketing Xbox, said that there would be no new Xbox announcements in 2012. He went on to make a very good point.

“We’re not here to counter Nintendo and they’re not here to fight the other manufacturers. Nintendo has put itself in a different cycle, they’re advancing at their own pace.”

Meanwhile, CEO of PlayStation France had a similar view stating the following;

“Wii is pressed for time because it’s in decline. In our case, we have a lot less pressure. We were the last to release PS3, and we will probably be the last to announce something.”

I personally would not at all be surprised if both companies make a prototype announcement at E3 in June. I see Microsoft being in a more volatile position to move towards the next generation as the Xbox 360 is showing a few signs of ageing. The PS3 will more than likely be announced at a later date although Sony is noted for saying they want to have a smaller launch window between them and their competitors for the next generation.

5) Useful app of the day. London Bus Checker offers you live bus travel information in London. You can map out the route the bus takes and the app offers users a 30 day free trial. Full price is currently £1.24.

6) This week’s game charts have only seen a bit of shuffling again. FIFA 12 retains the chart cup for the sixth week running. Two new entries this week with Resident Evil Revelations 3DS taking sixth place and the Sims 3 expansion pack in at 23. The remainder of the top 5 are filled by COD MW3, Skyrim, Just Dance 3 and Battlefield 3 in that order.

7) A few interesting behind the scenes articles to finish off the news today. An interview about the Buddhist beliefs that went into creating super crazy insane over the top did I mention crazy game Asuras Wrath and another exploring the creation of the opening cinematic for Deus Ex Human Revolution.

News Summary 27th January 2012

January 27, 2012 in Gaming, Technology

1) Spotify has announced it now has over 3 million paying premium subscribers. That accounts for slightly more than 20% of its userbase. The success can be attributed to the company’s recent expansion into the USA and integration with Facebook. It is also a great example of how consumers are willing to pay for music if the model is attractive. The success is having the opposite effect on some music labels who despite gaining income from the service, do not believe it is enough to sustain their companies and are greedy for a larger share of the profits. This has lead to various labels pulling out from the service. If the trend continues then it may destroy Spotify and take the whole music labels vs piracy debate back to square one.

2) Retailers have launched their promotion onslaught for the PS Vita. Today over 600 GAME and GameStation stores across the country received their display units of the new handheld to promote in store. You are welcome to go into any store and test the device out. If you want to go hands on with a range of titles make sure you check out PlayStation Access on Facebook to find out about their Vita Room events across the country. The deal with mobile network Vodafone has also been reiterated with Wipeout 2048 still being a free title if you register a data contract from the network. Prices are yet to be announced. The US PS Blog also announced a special edition bundle that would include an 8GB memory card for free. Amazon.de has a similar offer although Amazon UK have yet to advertise their incentive. Tesco are running a £10 off promotion with coupon but ToysRUs have the best deal currently. They are offering the PS Vita WiFi for £205 and WiFi/3G for £250 with a voucher code until the 31st January. More details here http://www.postabargain.co.uk/categories/psp/other-psp-games/015011

3) Activision blogger Dan Amrich has placed the blame on PS3 gamers for assuming that they would receive Elite content at the same time as Xbox Elite gamers. He suggests that Activision never explicitly stated that Elite bonuses would override the DLC exclusivity agreement the company has with Microsoft. The PS3 community is not happy with the circumstance as many assumed that they had to pay to receive the content at the same time as Xbox Elite members. In reality PS3 gamers will only receive the content before non Elite PS3 fans and will have to wait a yet undisclosed time period (most likely 1 month) for the content to appear on PSN.

4) The first three batches of DLC for Soul Caliber V will feature music from previous games and customization options for the game’s create a character mode. Unfortunately Namco has not realised that fighting game fans would much rather have new characters to download for DLC like Mortal Kombat did last year over cosmetic items of clothing.

5) Online news site PocketNow has apparently gone hands on with HTC’s new Sense 4.0 UI for it’s upcoming Android smart phones. Notable new elements include the addition of a landscape mode and a guest mode which can be useful for giving others access to limited parts of your phone when required. For the full debrief visit the following link. http://pocketnow.com/android/htc-sense-40-first-impressions

6) NBA 2K11 is one of the most played online games this week on Xbox Live according to community manager Major Nelson otherwise known as Larry Hyrb. The significance of the finding is that NBA 2K12 is the latest title on the market and it should be more played then last year’s game. A few reasons why it is not may be due to online issues that plagued NBA 2K12 on launch and the absence of Jordan mode which was present in 2K11. One of my friends who is a big fan of the franchise has also mentioned that the AI in 2K12 has taken a turn for the worse in the sense that they do not play realistically.

7) Is there any platform you cannot play Angry Birds on? The answer is surprisingly yes. Facebook has yet to obtain its own version of the addictive app and it is definitely ready to launch on Valentines day February 14th.

8) YouTube has made a few visual tweaks to the site today making browsing channels easier. More video editing functions are set to be rolled out over the next few days too.

9) BBC Question Time is a popular debate show that airs regularly in the UK. On February 20th a debate will take place analyzing the state of the Games Industry. Tickets are free for GamesIndustry.Biz readers and once they have all gone will cost £5. More information here. http://baftagamesqt1.eventbrite.com/

10) Finally to round off the news four new trailers released today each worth a look.

After yesterday’s announcement that the Wii U will be in stores by Christmas in all major territories, Nintendo Company President Saturo Iwata has announced the launch of a new online portal dubbed Nintendo Network for the upcoming Wii U console and 3DS handheld during a Q3 Finance call.

The Nintendo Network will operate in a similar way to Sony’s PlayStation Network and Microsoft’s Xbox Live services. Nintendo have not needed such an elaborate service until now due to the lack of AAA title support for the Wii which usually offer DLC post launch. That will change for the Wii U as revealed in a game montage during E3 2011 where it was clear that publisher multiplatform support would stem out beyond Sony and Microsoft to Nintendo’s new offering via teased games such as Darksiders 2.
