A group of modders have found a way to allow PS Vita owners to remotely play PS3 games on their shiny new devices through an exploit in Ps3 Firmware Version 3.55. It’s a lot of hassle to get it working yourself but videos have started popping up showing gamer Homer49 playing Battlefield 3, Red Dead Redemption and Mortal Kombat amongst others which all in their original state do not support Remote Play. The exploit involves modifying one line of code on a game disc which is inaccessible with a stock firmware console.

You may be asking how these games work properly as the PS Vita lacks L2, R2, L3 and R3 inputs. A nice workaround allows the PS Vita’s rear touch screen to be split into four areas of input, one for each missing physical button. The comfortable shape of the PS Vita and the addition of the second analogue stick means gamers can have a pleasant experience minus the input lag.

This is a great innovation and use of the technology although I do not see Sony bringing it to consumers as a mainstream feature anytime soon for financial and legal reasons. Who knows, they may use it to retaliate the uniqueness of Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U especially now that the community have proven it is more then achievable.
